Truss
AI intake, workpapers, and on-demand US prep capacity for tax firms.
Overview
Truss is an end-to-end tax workflow platform that consolidates client intake, document management, workpaper preparation, and return delivery into one system for US tax firms. The intake layer uses AI-generated checklists built from prior-year data, with zero-login client upload links. Documents auto-rename, rotate, de-dupe, and bookmark themselves into a single tick-and-tie workpaper PDF in return order.
The distinctive layer that Soraban and StanfordTax do not offer is optional human or AI prep routing. Firms can hand a return off to Truss's US prep team (around 72-hour turnaround with two reviews) or to AI prep at a fixed per-return price. Finished work returns to the firm's chosen tax software. That makes Truss as much a surge-capacity service as it is a software tool, useful for firms that flex headcount in March and April rather than hiring seasonal staff.
Truss does not auto-populate fields in the tax engine the way Soraban does. Its strength is workpaper organisation and prep capacity, not direct data entry. Tax-software "alignments" cover UltraTax, CCH Axcess, CCH ProSystem fx, Lacerte, ProSeries, ProConnect, Drake, ATX, and GoSystem Tax RS, but in the practical sense of producing a workpaper PDF organised to drop into any of these suites. QuickBooks integration is requested by users in reviews and not yet shipped.
Pricing is custom. Truss does not publish a public rate card, the entry point is a sales demo. One third-party reference cited "around $3,000 annually for unlimited use" but that is unverified anecdote rather than the live rate card. The per-return prep options (AI Prep, Assisted, US Expert) are described as having transparent pricing, though the actual numbers are gated to logged-in users.
Truss runs an affiliate program through Dub Partners. Public terms are $100 per qualified referral attending a demo, $500 per new customer signed, and a 10 percent discount to the referred firm for the first 12 months. That is one of the more attractive published affiliate offers in the category.
Geography is US-only in practice. The product is built around the US 1040, K-1, §7216 compliance, and US data residency. Tax-software list is entirely US-targeted. UK, Canadian, and Australian tax workflows are not supported. Note the name collision: Truss Payments (acquired by Baseline in November 2024) is a separate construction-AP company. The Truss in tax intake is gettruss.io.

Fit
Who fits
- Solo and small US tax firms running 100 to 500 1040s a season wanting one tool for intake, workpapers, and prep capacity.
- Mid-size firms on UltraTax, Lacerte, Drake, CCH Axcess, or ProConnect wanting an AI-assisted intake layer in front.
- Tax-only firms wanting to flex headcount in March and April by routing overflow returns to a US prep team.
Who does not
- Firms outside the US. Truss is built around US 1040 and K-1 rules and integrates with US tax software only.
- Firms wanting automated data entry into tax software. Truss stops at a clean workpaper PDF, Soraban handles that.
- Bookkeeping-led practices needing QuickBooks-deep integration. The QBO connector is not yet shipped.
