Overview
Bench matches each business with a dedicated human bookkeeper who works in Bench's own system. The bookkeeper handles most transaction categorization, monthly financial statements, and year-end tax-ready reports. Unusual transactions get flagged to the client for clarification, and clients upload requested documents such as receipts or bank records. The service targets small business owners. For a practitioner, Bench is either a competitor that might pull away very small clients, or a referral destination for businesses too small to serve profitably.
Pricing starts at $199 a month for Bookkeeping Light, which is for businesses with $250,000 or less in annual revenue. The standard Bookkeeping plan is $399 a month, and Bookkeeping + Tax is $649 a month, adding a licensed tax pro and business income tax filing with up to four tax advisory calls per year. Paying annually saves 20%, bringing the plans to $1,910, $3,830, or $6,230 per year. For clients already using QuickBooks Online, Bench offers a fractional bookkeeper at $55 an hour plus a $1,200 one-time onboarding fee. That person works inside the client's existing QuickBooks account rather than Bench's software.
Bench has run since 2012. In December 2024 it paused operations and was acquired within days by Employer.com, resuming service in January 2025 with its in-house bookkeeping team. The platform reports over 35,000 business owners across more than 70 industries, from salons and coffee shops to agencies and law practices.
Security details include AI assistants that run on closed models, with Bench stating that prompts and client data are not used to train public or third-party AI systems. Bank connections use Plaid with read-only access, and the platform undergoes SOC 2 Type 2 and SOC 3 examinations each year. Encryption standards are AES-256 and TLS. Clients can export their completed work at any time, even after they cancel.
The fit for an accounting firm depends on the client. If a very small business wants a straightforward bookkeeping solution and does not need direct control over the books, Bench can be a clean referral. If the client wants you to manage everything in your firm's preferred tools, Bench is not a fit, because on standard plans the books live in Bench's own software. For firms with a handful of tiny, low-complexity clients, Bench is a practical alternative to taking on work that does not make sense for your billing rates.
