Digits

AI-native general ledger for US small businesses and the firms that serve them.

Overview

Most AI bookkeeping tools bolt onto QuickBooks or Xero and depend on the underlying ledger for everything. Digits took the opposite approach: it built an AI-native general ledger from scratch, handling transaction categorisation, bank reconciliation, and financial statement preparation as a standalone platform for solo and small accounting firms. The Autonomous General Ledger runs with very little human touch, and the product evolved from a QuickBooks overlay into a full standalone ledger over the past year.

The standout architecture is a three-layer model. Transactions are categorised first against the client's own history, then against the firm's history (for partner-program firms), then against patterns learned across all Digits users. There are no bank rules to write. The system learns from confirmed transactions instead, which means new clients get smarter the longer the books run.

SMB pricing starts at $65 per month for Essentials, which covers live P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, AI bookkeeping, and banking and payroll integrations across 12,000+ institutions. Core at $100 per month adds revenue and spend integrations including Stripe, Ramp, and BILL, plus dimensional accounting by department or location. Advanced is in early access for multi-entity and multi-currency clients with consolidated financials.

The Accountant Partner Program is a separate gate. Firms managing 50 or more clients on Digits get wholesale pricing, free Digits subscription for the firm's own books, Firm Models (private firm-level AI), a branded interface, and dedicated migration support. Application-only. Over 700 firms have applied.

Digits is US-only at every layer. Geographic availability is limited to US-based entities. The QuickBooks compatibility is a one-time historical migration import at cutover, not an ongoing two-way sync. The 30-day free trial covers Essentials and Core. There is no permanent free tier on the SMB product.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • US founders and early-stage businesses on cash basis or simple accrual that want hands-off bookkeeping.
  • Firms with 50 or more US clients that want firm-specific AI models and free books for their own practice.
  • US clients standardised on Stripe, Ramp, Mercury, BILL, and Gusto that want one ledger absorbing those feeds.

Cons

  • Firms with UK, AU, CA, or EU clients. Digits is US-only at every layer.
  • Mid-market accrual-heavy clients with inventory or multi-currency. Multi-entity sits in early access.
  • Firms wanting an ongoing two-way QuickBooks sync. Digits replaces QuickBooks rather than syncing with it.
